Skill Overview

tradingview-reader is a read-only AI agent skill that connects to the local TradingView desktop application to help you query options chains, implied volatility, multi-market screener results, news, watchlists, and price alerts. It never trades or modifies any account settings.

3. Pre-market and intraday monitoring: In a single sentence, check which alerts were triggered while you were offline, what assets are in your watchlists, or the latest news headlines and full articles for a particular holding, giving you a quick overview of overnight developments.

Core Features

1. Options chain and volatility analysis: Read the complete options chain or narrow it by expiration to a range near ATM. Results include bid/ask/mid, implied volatility, all five Greeks, and theoretical price. It can also list the days remaining and number of contracts for each expiration, while supporting real-time quotes for the underlying.
2. Multi-market screener: Supports custom output columns, filters, and sorting—for example, “U.S. stocks with RSI|60 below 30, sorted by volume” or “top 50 cryptocurrencies by market cap.” Screening logic is driven by JSON criteria, with structured output for further analysis.
3. Read-only access to account data: View all watchlists, including color-coded groups such as red, orange, yellow, and green; alert statuses of various types (active, triggered, triggered while offline, and complete logs); TradingView news (headlines and full text); the current chart state; and chart screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can tradingview-reader automatically place trades?

No. This is explicitly designed as a read-only skill. It does not place orders, provide opinions, modify watchlists, or change chart layouts or alerts. The plugin itself exposes no write interfaces. If you need automated trading, please look for a dedicated tool.

How does it differ from the tradingview-mcp skill?

tradingview-mcp is a lightweight solution with a built-in MCP server that does not require the desktop application. It is suitable for basic quotes, technical indicators, screeners, and options chains without Greeks. tradingview-reader requires the TradingView desktop application to be installed locally and logged in, but additionally provides Greeks, IV skew for each strike, expiration lists with contract counts, as well as account-linked data such as watchlists, alerts, and chart state. Choose reader when you need in-depth options analysis or personal account data; choose mcp when you only need market snapshots.

What needs to be prepared before use?

Three things are required: install the TradingView desktop application on macOS and log in within the app; install opencli and its TradingView plugin; and run opencli tradingview launch once to restart the application with a debugging port. Before restarting, save any unsaved drawings on your charts. You can then use opencli tradingview status at any time to confirm the connection status. Also note that whether the options chain is available for certain assets depends on your account’s subscription level.
