writing-beats
Writing, exploit; assemble raw material into a journey of beats, grounding each term before a beat leans on it.
writing-beats — An AI Writing Skill for Writing Long-Form Pieces Step by Step by “Beat”
Skill Overview
writing-beats is an AI writing skill that turns a prepared body of material into an article one “beat” at a time. Each time, it writes only the current beat and then stops, offering 2–3 candidates for the next beat in different directions for you to choose from. At the same time, it continuously maintains a concept list to ensure that readers have encountered each term before it is used in the main text.
It belongs to the extraction phase of the writing process: research and material collection are already complete, and the pool of source material is fixed. This skill is responsible for selecting a path and writing it into an article.
Use Cases
-
The research is done, but you don’t know how to organize a pile of notes into an article. The material is already sitting in a single Markdown file. What’s missing isn’t information but a path forward. You need a writing process that moves ahead one section at a time and lets you confirm the direction at every step.
-
You’re writing a technical article or a long-form nonfiction piece and worry that readers will drop off when a certain term appears. The most common mistake in this kind of writing is, “The author already understands it, so they assume the reader does too.” Before writing each beat, writing-beats checks whether the concepts that beat will use have already been introduced earlier.
-
You want to retain control over the article’s direction. Instead of having AI generate the entire piece in one go and then heavily revising it, you want it to stop after each section so you can review it and decide which direction to take next.
Core Features
-
Advance only one beat at a time—never write ahead
Each round writes only the current beat and then stops. The length of a beat depends on the task it needs to accomplish: a transition may be just one sentence, while a complete argument or example may span several paragraphs. If a beat requires five paragraphs and three subheadings, that means two beats have been stuck together and should be split apart.
-
Concept grounding management
The skill maintains a list of concepts that have already been “grounded.” Every concept can be grounded in only one of two ways: either it is a prerequisite concept defined before writing, which readers are assumed to already understand, or it is introduced by an earlier beat. A candidate beat can be selected only if all the concepts it depends on have already been grounded—this is the one rule in the entire process that cannot be violated.
-
Branching beat candidates
Each round provides 2–3 candidate next beats, each taking a different direction—changing the setting, establishing an argument, posing a question, inserting narration, or shifting the angle—and labels which new concepts each one will introduce. You can see clearly which previously inaccessible approaches will be unlocked by choosing a particular beat.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is writing-beats different from simply asking AI to write an entire article?
When you generate an entire article at once, you get one large finished draft, and revising it usually means rewriting the whole thing. writing-beats stops after each beat and lets you choose the direction, like a choose-your-own-adventure story. More importantly, there is concept grounding: when generating everything at once, AI can easily use a term in the second paragraph that readers won’t understand until the eighth; writing-beats makes this check a prerequisite for every beat.
That said, it is not suited to situations where “I just want a readable first draft.” It requires you to participate in the decision-making process throughout.
What do I need to prepare before using writing-beats?
Two things. First, you need a raw source-material file in Markdown format. This skill does not conduct research, so the pool of material must already be fixed. You also need to specify where the article should be saved; if you don’t, it will ask once and remember your answer.
Second, you need to agree on the prerequisite concepts: which concepts can be assumed to be immediately familiar to readers, while all others must be introduced by a beat in the main text. This is the biggest lever in the entire process. Setting the bar too high will keep readers from entering the article, while providing too much grounding will make the opening sections consist entirely of terminology explanations.
Also note that this skill disables automatic model invocation, so you need to trigger it manually.
Can I revise paragraphs that have already been written?
Yes, and it will adapt accordingly. Before writing each new beat, the skill rereads the article file from disk, so your manual edits are fully preserved and will not be overwritten. If you make a substantial change to an earlier beat, the content written afterward will adjust accordingly.
You can also directly request, “Rewrite this beat,” or “Go back to beat three and try a different approach.” It will revise that beat in place without changing the others. The article ends when the journey is complete, not when the source material runs out—leaving some material unused is a normal outcome of this process.
