director-readiness-advisor: PM-to-Director Transition Coach

Skill Overview

director-readiness-advisor is an interactive career coaching skill that uses adaptive questions to diagnose exactly where you are in your journey from product manager (PM) to Director, providing practical coaching tailored to your circumstances rather than generic leadership advice.

Use Cases

  1. Preparing for promotion: You are still a senior product manager, planning to pursue a Director role within the next 3–12 months, and want to know which capability gaps to prioritize, such as strategic storytelling, altitude of thinking, or direction creation.
  2. Starting as a new Director: You have recently been promoted or joined a company as a Director (within the first 6 months), and find yourself constantly slipping back into tactical execution—or have taken over an established team that lacks a clear direction.
  3. In-role calibration and diagnosis: You have been a Director for more than 12 months, but something is consistently not working well in team performance, executive relationships, or portfolio strategy, and you need to diagnose the problem and determine how to adjust.

Core Functions

  1. Four-stage situation diagnosis: Through one diagnostic question and up to three adaptive follow-up questions, precisely identify which of the four transition stages you are in—“preparation,” “interview,” “new role,” or “calibration”—so you do not apply advice from the wrong stage to your situation. This is the most common mistake in transition coaching.
  2. Branching coaching guidance: Each stage branch provides 3–5 numbered recommendations based on your specific combination of pain point and situation. The guidance draws on the Altitude & Horizon framework and real-world cases, and focuses on concrete actions you can implement immediately, such as rewriting your one-on-one conversations or creating a Cascading Context Map.
  3. Failure-mode identification and correction: Helps you identify common transition traps—such as Hero Syndrome, People-Pleaser Leadership, and the Instant Gratification Trap—and provides actionable correction plans. This includes guidance on honestly assessing whether a senior IC path may be a better fit when appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get promoted from product manager to product director? Can this skill help me prepare?

Yes. If you are still a PM preparing for promotion, the skill will first ask which gap you most want to close—altitude of thinking, stakeholder navigation, strategic storytelling, or direction creation—and about your timeline (more than 6 months away, 3–6 months away, or currently applying). It will then provide targeted actions, such as restructuring your one-on-ones with your manager, practicing how to translate company priorities into team language, or auditing how often you personally jump in to put out fires. It is not a “promotion checklist”; it helps you identify the one or two behavioral changes that matter most for you.

I just became a Director but can’t stop jumping in to do the work myself. What should I do?

This is a classic case of Hero Syndrome and one of the most common problems among new Directors. The skill will first assess your team context—whether you inherited an established team, are building a new team, or are dealing with a hybrid situation—and then provide specific countermeasures: track the ratio of time you spend “solving problems yourself” versus “coaching others to solve problems” over a two-week period, design formal handoffs for the three execution tasks you perform most often, and establish new sources of achievement signals. If you have been in the role for more than a year and are still in this state, the skill will also help analyze the root cause and have an honest discussion about whether a senior IC path may suit you better.

How long does it take to use this skill? Will I be asked a lot of questions?

A single session takes approximately 10–15 minutes. The process consists of one diagnostic question and up to three adaptive follow-up questions, followed by 3–5 numbered recommendations. You can choose any recommendation to explore further. If you describe your situation directly when invoking the skill—for example, “I’ve been a Director for 60 days, and I feel uncomfortable now that my former peers report to me”—the skill will use the information already provided to begin coaching and will not repeat questions that have already been answered. It will not give you a pass/fail verdict on whether you are “ready for promotion”—a transition is a decision, not a graduation exam.
